Lapis Lazuli is from the Latin "lapis meaning a stone and "azul" meaning "blue". Lapis Lazuli, the "sapphire" of the ancients, was favored for its deep, blue color often flecked with "gold" (iron pyrite). The Egyptians regarded lapis as a sacred stone of celestial origin and a symbol for truth. Regalia made of gold and lapis was believed to place the wearer under the protection of the sun and heaven. Often worn as a protective talisman, lapis was also believed to have strong powers of attraction and the ability to help the wearer gain favors and realize hopes.
